Product information "Cauliflower - set of 5 pieces"

The "cabbage" of the cauliflower we eat is actually an undeveloped, thickened flower stem with flower buds (the "florets").

PLANTS:
There are specific varieties for each cultivation method and planting period. The wrong variety choice usually means a lot of leaves and little cabbage. With plants from Allégrow you are sure to plant the right variety at the right time.

CULTIVATION TIPS:
Growing cauliflower is not that easy. Several things can go wrong during the relatively long cultivation period. Thus, a simple manual with a guarantee of 'very large cauliflowers' does not exist. Especially with the recent vagaries of the climate, you need some experience and 'green fingers' to grow beautiful cabbages. The early cultivation and autumn cultivation offer the best chance of success. Stay optimistic though, mini cabbages are fun too!

Cauliflower desires undisturbed and smooth growth and has high demands on the soil, water and food supply.
A very humus-rich, moisture-rich and lime-rich soil with a good structure is ideal. On a light soil it is better not to grow cauliflower in summer, spring and autumn crops can.
Plant your cabbage plants in full sun and give them enough space: planting distance 60 x 60 cm.
Make sure that the plants are always sufficiently moist (especially from the cabbage forming onwards). Water preferably in the evening, but avoid 'compacting' the soil as this increases the risk of club foot.
Halfway through the cultivation, from the formation of the cabbage, it is best to add some extra fertilizer.
From the moment the cabbages become visible, it is best to 'cover' them: either by tying the leaves together, or by folding and breaking a few leaves inwards. This will shield the cabbages from the sunlight and keep them nice and white.
Harvesting should be done when the cauliflower is sufficiently developed, but still firm and closed.
Cauliflower cannot be stored for a long time.

PROBLEMS AND DISEASES:
Water balance is very important for a cabbage: too much or too little water cause growth problems. A major problem in cabbage crops is "clubfoot": the roots thicken into small tubers, the plant lags in growth and will not give a cabbage, worthy of the name. Only sufficient crop rotation can prevent this problem. So make sure you have a good rotation. Also beware of the cabbage fly": it lays its eggs at the base of the cabbage and the larvae attack the main root, causing the plant to die. Caterpillars: Ask for advice in your garden center. Slugs: Regularly put slug pellets between the plants. Contact your garden center.
