CULTIVATION TIPS:
Tomatoes can be grown in a greenhouse as well as in the open, although greenhouse cultivation is preferred. A sunny spot is especially important. Tomatoes do not tolerate frost
When growing tomatoes, you need to support the stem, either with a support pole, a spiral or by tying it to a wire. Tomatoes grown outside must be topped between mid-July and late July, because bunches that develop after that do not ripen anyway. It is best to pinch off 2 leaves after the last bunch. Tomatoes grown in greenhouses can be topped around mid-August.
To reduce the risk of disease, it is advisable to cut leaves from under the harvested trusses to keep the crop airy. It is best not to cut the leaves if the plant is damp.
Another important issue in growing tomatoes is the pollination of the flower heads. When the plants are outside,
this is done by the wind. But when growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, you have to vibrate a new cluster every few days, when the flowers are open. This is best done around 11 o'clock in the morning, when the humidity is neither too high nor too low
Watering is best done in the morning and not on the plant, but at the base of the plant. Tomatoes grow on most soil types, but good drainage is important. A good organic stock fertilizer in the winter is ideal, and make sure there is enough potassium in the soil during cultivation
Aperitif tomatoes do not need to be thinned. Only when they are too rampant can you cut away some side shoots
ADVICE FOR PROBLEMS:
Many problems in tomatoes arise from improper fertilization. A good fertilization recommendation and possibly
soil analysis in advance can prevent many problems. Especially in the hobby greenhouse, the soil is sometimes insufficiently flushed in the winter so that it becomes too salty. This causes, among other things, nose rot
Potato blight or tomato blight is a major problem. Brown spots appear, both on the leaves, the stem and on the fruit. We can avoid the tomato plague as much as possible by sufficiently ventilating the greenhouse, never watering on the plant itself, but always at the foot and by not growing tomatoes near potatoes
Cultivation rotation is important to avoid cork root. The rule here is : to grow tomatoes in the same place no more than once every 4 years. Otherwise, it is better to plant grafted plants
HARVESTING AND STORAGE:
Tomatoes do not belong in the refrigerator, but store best at a temperature between 10 and 12 °C. Unripe tomatoes that are already starting to color can be left to ripen further indoors in a well-ventilated place, possibly with newspaper on top.
