Novena candles burn for nine days & nights, hence they are also called 9-day burners. These candles are often burned to seek comfort/strength & express special wishes during difficult times (e.g. illness, bereavement, exams...). This is a series of nine days during which people pray to God, often in preparation for a feast day (e.g., the Pentecost Novena). The candle reinforces the prayer.
