Product information "Savoy cabbage/Green cabbage - set of 5 pieces"
Savoy cabbage is one of the oldest types of cabbage. Although it can also be grown early in the year, it is best known as a typical autumn vegetable. Savoy cabbage is by nature a biennial crop, which forms the 'cabbage' in the first year and starts flowering in the second year. It is a so-called head cabbage, closely related to white cabbage, pointed cabbage and red cabbage. The edible part, the 'cabbage', is actually a terminal bud that consists of many rigidly growing, overlapping leaves that form a closed head. The leaves are thick, puckered and curled. They are strong and can tolerate quite a bit of frost. However, the cabbage itself is less firm than, say, red cabbage, so it cannot be stored for very long.
CULTIVATION TIPS:
Savoy cabbages need to build up a lot of leaf mass while growing and are in the field for a long time. Therefore, they (like all other cabbages) have high soil requirements.
-A very humus-rich, moisture-rich and lime-rich soil with a good structure is ideal.
-Good soil drainage is essential for savoy cabbage, especially in winter (avoid frozen pools around your savoy cabbage).
-Before starting your cultivation, make sure you have a good base fertilizer and enough lime.
-Plant your cabbage plants in full sun and give them plenty of space:
-planting distance 60 x 60 cm.
-When planting, press the soil around the cabbage plants well and water abundantly immediately.
-Halfway through the cultivation, from the formation of the cabbage, it is best to add some extra fertilizer.
-Savoy cabbages tolerate a lot of frost. You can simply leave them in the field during the winter, even until March of the following year.
-Harvest only when the weather is dry.
PROBLEMS AND DISEASES:
-Snotch foot: irregular swelling at the roots that prevents the plant from absorbing nutrients. Cause is insufficient fruit rotation or too wet soil. To prevent infestation, it is necessary to strive for a good fruit rotation (1/4 year).
-Cabbage fly: lays eggs at the base and the larvae attack the main root. Prevent this by placing a cloth over the plants.
-Caterpillar infestations
