A neat grass edging, a winding garden path or a neatly defined flower border? With plastic edging, you can effortlessly finish off any area in the garden. Plastic is a particularly popular material for garden edging because it doesn’t rot, lasts for years and is very low-maintenance. What’s more, many of our plastic edging products are made from recycled materials (such as the well-known Ecolat), so you’re also making an eco-friendly choice. Whether you want to create a neat, straight line or organic curves, plastic is easy for any DIY enthusiast to work with and install.
What should you look out for when choosing a plastic edging?
To make the right choice for your garden project, it’s best to bear the following characteristics in mind:
- On a roll or as straight slats: Do you want to create an organic, curved shape (for example, around a tree or a kidney-shaped pond)? If so, opt for plastic edging on a roll, as this material is extremely flexible. For clean, straight lines (such as along a driveway or a neat border), it is better to choose the rigid straight slats.
- The right height: Ensure the edging is high enough for your application. A border with a thick layer of bark or gravel requires a higher edge (e.g. 14 to 19 cm) than a subtle lawn edge.
- Colour and finish: Black and grey are the most popular colours as they blend in nicely with the shade cast by plants and ground cover. For use in the lawn, a green version is often available too.
- Fixing materials: Don’t forget to order the matching posts (such as Ecopic) as well. These ensure a secure and invisible anchorage in the ground.
Why choose plastic for the garden?
Although wood and Corten steel have their own charms, plastic offers specific advantages that are perfectly suited to modern gardening:
- Rot-proof and weather-resistant: When in direct contact with damp soil, plastic will not rot, go mouldy or rust. This ensures it will last for decades.
- Budget-friendly: Compared to natural stone or steel, plastic is a very cost-effective solution, ideal for larger gardens requiring many running metres of edging.
- Safe for children and pets: Plastic edging, particularly the thicker varieties, does not have razor-sharp edges like some metal edging, and it does not splinter like wood.
- Environmentally friendly: These days, the better-quality plastic edging is made from 100 per cent recycled plastic waste. This way, you give waste a useful second life in your garden.

- How do I install a plastic edging?
Dig a narrow trench in the desired location. Place the edging in the trench (on a roll or straight batten) and drive a matching plastic stake into the ground approximately every 50 centimetres. Screw the edging to the inside of the posts. Then fill the trench with soil, gravel or bark so that the posts are concealed from view. - Can I create a curve with plastic edging?
Yes, absolutely. If you want to create curves or circles, you should opt for plastic edging ‘on a roll’. This is specifically designed to bend easily and take on undulating shapes. - Does the edging protrude above the ground?
That’s up to you. For a lawn edge, we recommend placing the edging just below or level with the mowing height, so that the lawnmower can pass over it smoothly. For a gravel path or a raised flower border, it’s best to let the edging protrude a few centimetres above the ground to keep the material neatly in place. - How many fixing pegs do I need?
As a rule of thumb, use one fixing peg for every 50 centimetres. For very sharp bends or heavy loads, we recommend placing a peg every 30 to 40 centimetres for extra stability.
