Product information "Lovage - pot ø13 cm (Levisticum officinale)"

Lovage is also known by the name maggi plant. It is an easy perennial, native to southern Europe, which can grow up to 2m high. The appearance of the plant, as well as the taste and smell, resemble celery (maggi). Lovage has hollow stems and deep green, serrated leaves. The herb blooms from June to August with small greenish-yellow umbels and has a nice, spicy fragrance.

CULTIVATION TIPS:
Lovage thrives in both sunny and semi-shaded locations. It requires a well-drained, humus-rich and moist soil.

In a herb garden it is advisable to reserve a spot somewhere at the back, due to the great height of the plant. Lovage can also be grown in a pot on the terrace or balcony, but make sure to use a sturdy and large pot (minimum 24 cm). Regular manuring is necessary. In the winter the above ground parts die.

CULINARY:
Both the leaves, stems, and seeds can be used in cooking.

Lovage is a true seasoning. For people following a salt-free diet, lovage (= maggi) can replace salt. The fresh leaves, chopped, give a spicy flavor to various dishes: soups, sauces, stews, ragouts and mixed salads. Fresh leaves are best added just before serving. However, they may also be cooked along in your dishes without losing flavor.

For example, in mussels this is a topper: lovage is spicier than the traditional celery, which is why it is sometimes called mussel spice.
The stems can be used to cook with in your soups or stews to give off their flavor.
The seeds can be baked into bread or cake to give it extra flavor.

MEDICINAL:
Lovage is no stranger to homeopathy and traditional folk medicine.

Decoctions of the leaves and roots have a stomach strengthening effect and help with stomach cramps and bloating. Lava tea from the leaves promotes appetite and digestion.
