Variety selection for potatoes

This article is intended primarily for the hobby gardener. The requirements of a hobby gardener often differ from those of large-scale agriculture. For example, yield is usually of minor importance to the hobby gardener. Taste and potato pest resistance, on the other hand, are very important. A good example of this is the well-known 'bintje'. This is a very popular potato but for the hobby gardener we do not recommend this variety due to its sensitivity to potato blight.

Wich type of potato to choose is very personal. Below are some of our favorites:

  • Early potatoes: Obama
  • Semi-early potatoes: Charlotte
  • Late potatoes: Désirée

Disease-resistant seed potatoes also do very well. These are resistant to Phytophthora or the potato disease, for example:

  • Early potatoes: Obama
  • Semi-early potatoes: Carolus
  • Late potatoes: Texla, Sevilla (Bio) & Eco Alouette
