wild garlic in bloom

Ramson, a wonderful wonder of nature

Everyone knows chives, but their aromatic sister bear leek (Allium Ursinum) doesn't make it to the kitchen garden as often (and unjustly!).

Wild garlic reproduce readily, so there is a good chance that you will come across them in the wild. However, it is not advisable to pick ramson as its long narrow leaves are very similar to those of the poisonous lily of the valleySo only eat ramson that you grow yourself or can harvest at a greengrocer's or picking garden. During its flowering period (April-June), this herb bears its typical bulbous flowers, just like the other Allium descendants do. Unlike most garlic varieties, the flowers of the wild garlic are white instead of the regular purple. The flowers are edible too and brighten up your plate!

🌿 Eat yourself healthy

Wild garlic was named after the brown bears (ursus) who consumed the leaves after hibernation to cleanse their stomachs and intestines. Because of this, it is sometimes called bear's garlic. So you can already guess that ramson is not only delicious, but also has numerous health benefits to offer. Although wild garlic is mainly known for its disinfecting effect on the digestive system such as stomach, liver and intestines, it also works as a preventive against cardiovascular diseases. It ensures better blood clotting and combats arteriosclerosis. People with high blood pressure also benefit from regularly adding wild garlic to their menu. Suffering from a cold? Even then, wild garlic can offer relief through its anti-inflammatory effect.

🌿 Location

Wild garlic prefers a shady spot but can stand a little sun. It does well in moist, chalky soil. The plant grows to a height of 25 to 50 cm and reproduces easily.

🌿 Availability

Ramson is one of the first herbal plants available. You can find them from the end of March until the beginning of May. After that they come into flower, and will grow deeper and deeper into the soil. The taste is at its best just before flowering, so make sure you harvest enough before and during flowering. Is the ramson in the ground? Then it will reproduce more easily.

Do you like the full garlic flavour but less the accompanying smell afterwards? Then wild garlic is ideal! Shred the herb in your salad to give it a spicy touch. The fresh ramson is also delicious in herb butter or make green pesto with it! Are we all going to be using ramson soon?!😉
