A good nest is vital for hedgehogs. In it they can successfully pass the winter during hibernation. A nest is often made under a pile of tree trunks, in a compost heap or a pile of leaves. However, our tidy landscape often lacks opportunities for the hedgehog to build a nest. This hedgehog basket, as an imitation of a natural nest, is the ideal housing for a hedgehog. Place the hedgehog basket on a slightly dry surface in a sheltered and quiet place in the garden. Place some loose leaves in the basket. Then cover the basket with a thick layer of leaves, then with a plastic sheet, then again with leaves, branches and other natural materials. The opening should be left free and preferably not facing north or northeast. It is important that the structure is sufficiently sturdy so that dogs and badgers cannot easily destroy it.
